# Comments and Collaboration

Comments let people who know the work review a diagram without changing its source. This keeps human control with approved editors while making feedback part of the diagram's context instead of leaving it in chat or meeting notes.

## Add a comment

Open comment mode, choose a location on the diagram, and enter your display name and message. A comment can be attached to a canvas position or a Mermaid node when that context is available.

Use comments for questions, review notes, and follow-up tasks. For example:

- “Should this retry path go to the queue?”
- “Add the failure state here.”
- “Is this service also called by the worker?”

## Realtime updates

Comments are updated in realtime while collaborators are connected. If the connection drops, the app displays a reconnecting state; wait for the connection to recover before assuming a comment was not saved.

## Coordinate-based comments

Canvas comments use positions relative to the diagram rather than fixed screen pixels. This keeps pins associated with the same area as the diagram changes size.

The CLI can list comments for automation with [`merfolk diagrams comments`](/cli/diagrams/comments).
