# Create and Edit Diagrams

## Start with the work

From the home page, choose the option to create a diagram. Start with the process, system, journey, or decision you need to make visible. Give it a title, then add enough structure for another person to understand the first version.

You can also create diagrams from the [CLI](/cli/diagrams/create) when a terminal or automated workflow is more convenient.

## Edit the source

The editor provides a source pane and a rendered canvas. Edit the source to change the diagram; the preview updates as the definition changes. The source stays structured and repeatable, while the rendered result gives everyone a visual surface for review.

```mermaid
graph TD
  A[Browser] --> B[Merfolk]
  B --> C[Diagram]
```

## Autosave and iteration

Edits are saved automatically after you stop typing briefly. Watch the save status in the editor for confirmation, then share the result with the people who know the work. If saving fails, keep the page open and retry after checking your connection.

Autosave is not a version-control system. For important changes, keep the Mermaid source in your project or export it through the [CLI get command](/cli/diagrams/get).

## Navigate the canvas

Use the canvas controls to zoom and pan around larger diagrams. The source remains the canonical representation: if the preview is not what you expect, check the syntax in the editor. When the team agrees on a change, an approved editor can turn the feedback into the next version.
